Its gardening season friends!! What have you planted this year? In our little backyard garden we planted tomatoes, lettuce, kale, carrots, green beans, onions, cantaloupe, summer squash, pumpkin, peppers, and a variety of cut flowers. I can’t wait to see everything grow over the next few months.
Gardening season can be so amazing for the soul! We get to grow and harvest fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs to feed our bodies. Its a fun way to get outside and get moving. BUT, it can be hard on our hands, especially if we don’t wear gloves.
I’ve toyed with the idea of making a DIY gardener’s hand scrub for so long. We do a lot of yard work in general around our home: pulling weeds, trimming bushes, lawn maintenance, etc. Sometimes my hands are so dirty and grimy by the end of the day!
A DIY hand scrub is the perfect solution. It cleans, exfoliates, and moisturizes all at the same time. Another bonus, it smells so fresh, just like the garden.
This hand scrub would be such a cute DIY gift for gardeners if you have any other gardening gals in your life.
Even though this is a gardener’s hand scrub, I am really excited for my husband to try it out as well. His hands can get really greasy and grimy from working on the ranch and working on equipment. Hopefully this can be a better solution for cleaning his hands at the end of the day!
UPDATE: Ranch husband approved! Caleb LOVED using this to wash his hands after work. The grit in it really helped to get his hands clean and the coconut oil kept them moisturized.

How to Make a DIY Gardener’s Hand Scrub
Ingredients:
- zest of one lemon
- juice of one lemon
- 1/4 cup liquid castile soap
- 1/4 cup coconut oil (melted but not hot)
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup salt (I used fine sea salt)
- 6-8 drops each of lemongrass and peppermint essential oil
Instructions:
Combine all of the ingredients in a medium sized mixing bowl. Mix well. Store in a small mason jar with a lid. Keep at your kitchen sink or wherever you wash your hands most often.
How to Use Your DIY Gardener’s Hand Scrub
To use your DIY gardener’s hand scrub, take out a tablespoon of scrub when washing your hands. Scrub the the mixture over your hands focusing on where they are most dirty. When your hands are clean, rinse with water.
The salt and sugar in the mixture will help to scrub off any caked on dirt or mud, while the castile soap cleans and the coconut oil moisturizes.
About the Hand Scrub Ingredients
LEMON – lemon juice is naturally antibacterial, great for cleaning hands! It also smells amazing.
LIQUID CASTILE SOAP – liquid castile soap is an all-around awesome, natural home product. You can use it in everything from a DIY hand soap to dish soap and even as a body wash. Its non-toxic and biodegradable, and cleans much like any other regular soap.
COCONUT OIL – coconut oil is a natural oil derived from coconuts. Its great as a natural skin moisturizer.
SUGAR/SEA SALT– the sugar and sea salt in this recipe work as all natural skin exfoliates, helping to release dried on dirt and mud as well as flaky skin.
ESSENTIAL OILS – the essential oils in this recipe add an amazing and fresh, aromatic touch to the hand scrub. They also have other benefits as well! Lemongrass is purifying and toning when used on your skin (SOURCE). Peppermint essential oil can be uplifting for your mood when breathed in (SOURCE).

Ingredients
- zest of 1 large lemon
