It’s never a good thing when a stadium is better known for its game day party atmosphere (two swimming pools above the north end zone!) and fan protests (Jaguars fans once dressed up as clowns to bemoan another losing season) than sustained success on the field.

But that might be finally changing in Jacksonville, where this summer the city and team reached an agreement on a $1.4 billion renovation of 29-year-old EverBank Stadium. The deal will provide the aging facility a much-needed makeover and largely put to rest rumors of relocation, which have been circling the franchise for more than a decade.

If the project is approved by NFL owners this fall, as expected, construction would begin after the 2025 season and would be finished before the 2028 season. When completed, one of the league’s lowest-regarded stadiums will have an entirely different feel.

The Jaguars have played at EverBank Stadium — previously Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Alltel Stadium, EverBank Field and TIAA Bank Field — since joining the NFL as an expansion franchise in 1995. The city’s commitment to the project, as well as the Jaguars’ turnaround under coach Doug Pederson and quarterback Trevor Lawrence in recent years, speaks to a more optimistic future for the team. The Jaguars have often been among the league’s bottom-dwellers since the turn of the century.

After finishing third from the bottom in attendance during the disastrous Urban Meyer-coached season of 2021, the Jaguars have improved steadily each of the last two seasons (22nd in 2022, 17th in 2023). The Jaguars have also been an annual overseas team, playing at least one game in London every season since 2013 (except for 2020 due to the pandemic), which sparked rumors that London might become their permanent home in the not-too-distant future.

With the $1.4 billion renovation on the way, the Jaguars will call Jacksonville home for the foreseeable future.

The Athletic has compiled 32 stadium guides, one for each NFL team, to give fans vital information about the game day experience. We’ve also asked readers to weigh in on the best food, beer and tailgate options at each stadium, among other things, to help football fans enjoy their visit.

Insider tips

2024 must-watch game at stadium: vs. Green Bay Packers, Oct. 27

After a challenging start to the season — the Jaguars will face four playoff teams from 2023 in the Dolphins, Browns, Bills and Texans out of the gate — another test arrives in late October, when the Packers visit Jacksonville for the first time since 2016.

Two playoff contenders. Two of the league’s young stars at QB. This should be a good one.

Fan tradition to know: ‘DUUUUUUVALLL’

The Jaguars’ definitive rallying cry remains “DUUUUUUVALLL,” an ode to Duval County, where the team plays. When on defense, the video boards will flash “Lock Down the Bank” on the screens in an effort to get the fans on their feet, screaming as loud as possible. And each time the Jags earn a first down on offense, the fans respond in unison, “Move those chains!”

But for one of the league’s younger teams, the Jags haven’t yet established the traditions of some of their other NFL counterparts.

Zak Keefer’s favorite thing

Post-renovation, EverBank Stadium will be a different game day experience, and the stadium should have some of the feel and aesthetics of L.A.’s SoFi Stadium. One thing that’s typically not a concern: the weather, which after the initial month of the season is among the best in the league.

The Athletic’s stadium ranking: 29

Jon Machota ranked all 30 NFL stadiums in August 2023. Anyone who has visited EverBank Stadium in recent years knows it needs work. Even with owner Shad Khan pouring upward of $60 million into the stadium (the pool cabanas and sprawling video boards) before the high-priced renovation was approved, it remained one of the league’s worst. Almost every inch of the facility felt dated. Early-season games had fans baking in the blistering sun. And the product on the field wasn’t very good: The Jaguars have made the playoffs just twice since 2008. Eventually, a state-of-the-art stadium located downtown on the St. Johns River might help the rest of the league start looking at the Jaguars differently. But this is going to take some time. The start of the 2028 season feels a long way off.

Fans’ game day advice

The Athletic surveyed NFL fans for their feedback on the following questions:

What is the ‘best bang for your buck’ seating section?

My seating is section 110 these days, but the best answer is buy whatever is cheap and walk the concourse/Bud Zone. That was the way to go when I was younger and couldn’t afford great seats or season tickets. — James H.

I’ve had season tickets in the home side upper deck 409 and 410. Great view of the field and price isn’t outrageous. Section 124 is great to sit in as well for the end zone and crazy fans. — Daniel O.

Is this a joke? It’s the POOLS. C’mon. Watching NFL from the pool. — Caitlin C.

124 if you’re a Jags fan but beware, this is the standing encouraged section! Don’t expect to see the field if you’re going to sit the whole game! — Johnny M.

What’s the can’t-miss food?

My can’t-miss food is the 400-level foot-long sausage and peppers dog. The Mister Softee ice cream stand at 408 is a great option as well. — Daniel O.

What’s the best beer option?

Anything Bold City, especially Duke’s Brown Ale, is a solid choice for craft beer. — James H.

Best beer option is to get a 25-ounce light beer when it’s hot and humid. I’m sure there are craft options, but prices are elevated, so I keep it simple. — Daniel O.

Where is the best spot to take a photo?

The Jaguar in front of the stadium or a photo at the stairs at section 410-411 overlooking the field. — Daniel O.

Definitely the pool deck. No, you don’t need a ticket to go up there, but you do need one to get in the pool. — Johnny M.

What are the kid-friendly activities/options at the stadium?

Tons of things to do in the Fan Experience area by Daily’s Place concert venue. — James H.

Take your kid to guest services on their first game to get swag, then to the Firehouse Subs fire truck near the Bud Zone. — Daniel O.

Where is the best place to tailgate?

Lot J is the go-to for the diehards, but you really can’t go wrong anywhere. — James H.

The tailgate is the most important part, and the best tailgate is at 401 Bryan Street (corner of Duval and Bryan) with the Teal Street Hooligans and Bold City Brigade! — Johnny M.
