This is my analysis of how Russians have destroyed a hydroelectric plant in southern Ukraine, trying to undermine the economy of this region and making people there poor and desperate. Russians always bring poverty and suffering. Read this!

The #wars that started in the region may, at first glance, have #religious and #political flavor and civil liberties, but the weight of the #economic_perspective is definitely high in these wars. The #Libyan_war happened to control the #gas_and_oil fields of #North_Africa and the security (supply) of the #energy needed by #Europe. The #Syrian_war was over the passage/or not of the #Qatar_gas_pipeline to Europe from Syria, which was not allowed to pass and the new #Russia_Turkey_pipeline was replaced. The #Ukraine_war happened for many years over the gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine and Russia's dominance over Ukraine's underground and surface resources. And now a war #Palestain_Israel: happened that almost targeted the #India_Saudi_Israel corridor and has caused a serious challenge. Can #Iran use this opportunity to export to Europe or will it face a serious challenge if it does wrong?Certainly, one end of the story is connected to Europe.

Two weeks ago, Modi and Xi shook hands and told their officials to sort out the border conflict asap. Those of us who are more seasoned took this as PR - the gap between India and China is very wide. Wider I feel than US-China's gap - and that is saying something. (Two sensitive nations that want to be the Voice of Asia, and Global South, that have fought a war, and still fighting one albeit undeclared (with sticks, stones, iron bars, and fists ....) It is Indian-ness vs Chinese-ness at its core. I mean China talks about US 'containment in Asia' - then how is India to read China's investment and actions in Pakistan, Myanmar and Sri Lanka? Anyway, ranting aside - now it is about dams, and how to exploit the world's melting great snow caps. Water is as zero sum as it is going to get - and this will be a flashpoint if India can get its armed forces updated, modernised in the next 20 years. (This is harder than it sounds).

The world grid is self-organizing invisibly right before our eyes.India’s efforts in recent years to establish greater energy connectivity with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka have been successful. India, Nepal and Bangladesh have finalized the draft of the Trilateral Power Trade Agreement. It is Delhi’s efforts to create more energy connectivity with neighboring countries. The agreement, the first of its kind, has been agreed upon by the three countries and is expected to be signed in the coming months. The agreement is said to fulfill the long-standing demand of Nepal and Bangladesh. Energy cooperation between Nepal and Bangladesh is one of the most promising areas of cooperation. Plans to make power an exportable good are outlined in Nepal’s 15th Five-Year Development Plan (2019-2024). Nepal plans to grow its 1,250 MW of electricity production to more than 5,000 MW within the next five years, making it an energy-surplus country. The goal of Bangladesh is to invest, produce, and import surplus energy from Nepal. The fact that Bangladesh and India use more electricity during the summer months, which is their busiest time of year, must be emphasized. #energytransition #india #nepal #bangladesh #electricity #electricgrid #worldgrid #regionalintegration #crossbordertrade #globalcooperation

Why there hasn't been any new Trans-Country Oil/Gas Pipeline announcement by India in the last decade or so?Trans-country pipelines have long been geopolitical assets and economic multipliers. Take the Nord Stream in Europe or the Keystone XL in North America, for example. For a rapidly growing economy like India, diversifying its energy sources isn't merely desirable; it's imperative.India's Historic Trans-country pipeline announcements:1. India–Pakistan–Iran Pipeline (IPI): A proposal from the '90s, the IPI aimed to channel natural gas from Iran to India via Pakistan.2. Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI): Initiated in 1995, this 1,814-kilometer pipeline sought to bring Turkmenistan's natural gas through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India.3. Myanmar–Bangladesh–India (MBI): Although not officially announced, this pipeline was slated to ferry natural gas from Myanmar to India through Bangladesh.Where Did They Go?1. Geopolitical Obstacles: The IPI pipeline has been thwarted by Indo-Pak tensions and U.S. sanctions on Iran.2. Security Risks: The TAPI pipeline has been significantly slowed down due to instability in Afghanistan.3. Economic Barriers: For MBI, issues like transit fees and financial feasibility have proven difficult to surmount. And no significant new announcements have been made recently and shall continue (in my humble opinion) w.r.t such pipelines. Why?In my view, there are few factors at play:1. The global shift towards renewable energy has dampened enthusiasm for fossil fuel projects. 2. India's investment in its internal infrastructure, such as city gas distribution networks and LNG terminals, signals a focus on domestic capabilities. 3. Geopolitical complexities continue to make trans-country projects riskier propositions.Economic Implications -The absence of these pipelines has led India to rely more on other energy sources, primarily coal and renewables, affecting both its energy sector and carbon footprint. The Way Forward - Should India reconsider such pipeline ventures? Given the evolving geopolitical landscape and the global move towards cleaner energy, the relevance of these projects is increasingly in question.#TransCountryPipelines #India #EnergySecurity #Geopolitics #pipelineindustry #oilandgasindustry #naturalgas #gasbasedeconomy
