The council will do what they want and not what is actually needed. The adding of this low key stuff will not propel camberley into a destination centre like Reading or Guildford or Basingstoke it is and will remain a low key shopping centre that needs knocking down and starting again rather than bits.

Interesting to see what actually happens. Is this what the town needs to improve? IMO this is a backward step and shows a lack of innovation and diversity of thought.

This area is prime real estate for so many empty lots and buildings. It’s overdue for significant redevelopment. There are talks about a specific European grocery store going into this space. #commercialrealestate #businessdevelopment #commercialinvestment

We don't know about you, but we love a department store. Everything under one roof! A cornucopia of delights! Can you imagine how exciting that must have been when they first started appearing in the mid to late 19th century? Now, however the age of the department store seems to be drawing to a close and subsequently many wonderful, sometimes genuinely historic buildings are at risk (think M&S in Oxford Street). Can they be adapted and reused? It's not easy, but there's a case to be made - and Tim Miles and Bridget Crossley of Montagu Evans have made it on The Planner website today. Meanwhile, with excellent timing, Historic England has launched a nationwide research project to find out more about the history and cultural significance of purpose-built department store buildings. We love it when a plan comes together.Click the pic below for a great précis of the history of department stores, their cultural meaning and their continued value as buildings that can serve more contemporary purposes.https://lnkd.in/eYmvT46aPic: The 1960s Cole Brothers department store in Sheffield, which subsequently became John Lewis and is about to be redeveloped as 'Cole store', a multipurpose work, leisure, eating and shopping destination.#townplanning #urbanplanning #departmentstores #heritagebuildings #builtheritage #heritage #historicbuildings

I'd like to think it is exciting news for Barnsley following the acquisition of the Alhambra Shopping Centre by Barnsley Council - it presents a unique opportunity to revitalise further the town centre. (https://lnkd.in/ekbiuepD)Following the development of the GlassWorks there are several strategies the council can employ to reinvigorate the Alhambra Shopping Centre:Community Engagement: Foster a sense of community ownership by involving local residents and businesses in the revitalisation process. Their input can provide valuable insights and ideas for the future of the Alhambra.Diverse Tenant Mix: Attract a diverse range of tenants and uses, including independent businesses, to create a unique experience. A mix of well-known brands and local treasures can make the Alhambra a destination for all.Entertainment and Events: Develop a calendar of events and entertainment options that draw visitors year-round - building on the GlassWorks. This can include live music, art exhibitions, and family-friendly activities.Improved Aesthetics: Enhance the aesthetics of the shopping center with modern design elements, public spaces, and pedestrian-friendly areas. A visually appealing environment can entice shoppers.Barnsley Council's acquisition of the Alhambra presents a tremendous opportunity to breathe further new life into this shopping center. #Barnsley #AlhambraRevival #CommunityFirst

If designed appropriately the mixed use look will not only enhance the aesthetics but create a streetscape that adds to the community feel, town center look, and enjoyment of not only it’s users but the populous. So the negatives ? Parking correct ? Not so, as having redesigned numerous malls, we find that many have inherent old parking layouts that if creatively redesigned by the architect utilizing both building and site design creativity, have netted usually a 20% increase in parking ; thereby the ability to go over /increase the GLA. Again the key is creativity and thinking out of the box. The site is a 3 dimensional canvas !
